Cost-Competitive, Sustainable Eco-Composite Components

This project will develop a ground-breaking new process for manufacturing high performance LFT (Long-Fibre Thermoplastic) moulding compounds from sustainable natural fibres and recycled carbon fibres. Previously it was only possible to make low-performance short fibre compounds from these discontinuous fibres. This project will develop the LFT manufacturing process itself, as well as developing the techniques for injection moulding these new materials. LFT moulding compounds are currently made from continuous virgin glass or carbon fibre. Our customers want to improve the environmental credentials and weight of LFT. - Natural fibres such as flax and jute offer a lighter and more sustainable option - Recycled carbon fibres close the materials loop and offer higher performance at a reasonable cost This project will deliver high performance LFT compounds from these discontinuous natural and recycled carbon reinforcement fibres. This project will advance the development to meet our customers’ cost, weight and performance targets, with demonstration of the material, process and product.
