Decentralised Business Model for Sanitation, Bio fertiliser and Energy

In this project we will have 125,000 people as beneficiaries through improved sanitation services and hygiene awareness, full recycling of waste streams, production of organic fertiliser for the local market and green power for the local grid. In other words, a closed loop model for the local community with a model that is self-sustaining with inclusion of key stakeholders, the public and private sector.

Project description

The main objective of the project is to catalyse improved hygiene, health and quality of life for urban slum communities in Ashaiman through a demonstrated and replicable business model for improved sanitation services, waste management and re-use. The project will thereby contribute to the sector goal of providing 90% of the population of Ashaiman with a domestic toilet by 2020 and the remaining 10% with access to hygienic public facilities. The project will benefit approximately 125,000 people by the end of 2016, which corresponds to approximately 50% of the total population in the target municipality. This total number of beneficiaries has taken into account the people benefiting from improved environmental sanitation: access to improved sanitation at competitive prices (improved price-quality ratio); reduction of hygiene related diseases through improved public toilets and waste management; access to green and stable energy supply; increased bio-fertiliser use in urban agriculture with higher crop yields and improved soil fertility; job creation through construction works and improved expertise; and job opportunities for men and women in sanitation, transport, waste treatment and agriculture resulting from this Project. The private sector will benefit from the project through participation in contracts for goods, works and services. Organic waste collection points will be established and operationalized. The collected waste (both organic and other waste) will be processed in two production units resulting in bio-fertiliser and biogas energy. Safi Sana Ghana Ltd (SSGL) will identify appropriate farmers within the Greater Accra region and sign purchase agreements with them to facilitate sales and utilisation of bio-fertilizer and SSGL will sign a power purchase agreement with the Electricity Company of Ghana for the sale of the electricity generated from the biogas. The project will achieve strong knowledge generation aspects by capacity strengthening and training of key stakeholders to understand the value of waste as resource and enhance long-term sustainability of this approach. The installed production units for the anaerobic digestion to produce bio-fertilisers and biogas energy will further serve as a community-learning centre to enhance learning and for leveraging resources for scaling up within and outside of the target location. Knowledge transfer is achieved by actively involving the Assembly and local entrepreneurs in the operation through training programmes in return for quality service supply. In addition, hygiene promotion linked to access to improved sanitation and improved living conditions from better waste collection will create motivation and awareness in the local community. MOFA will provide advocacy through their Extension Services while TREND through its established Learning Alliances will support the learning and sharing through meetings; preparation of factsheets/case studies/briefing notes and other multi-media sharing.
