Fiber optical textiles for road safety – FOTEX

In the outdoor space, lighting plays a crucial role to improve road safety and the perception of safety in streets. This proposal increases road safety by improving cyclists’ visibility in traffic. First of all by providing clothing-integrated LED sources (Fiber optical textiles for road safety – FOTEX). Second of all, these light sources are smartly connected to mobile appliances such as Google Maps to anticipate..cyclist movements. And lastly, with smart street lightning that will be part of ‘Smart Cities’..infrastructure the coming decades…..To overcome the obstacles connected with state of the art textile light FOTEX must realise large area illumination with only a few LEDs operated at low voltages and connected to polymeric optical fibers (POF). These fibers should be integrated into the textile by using conventional textile machinery (flatbed knitting, band weaving, bonding). The textile cable is connected to the PCB and sealed together…..At the end we arrive at revolutionary electro-optical textile devices, which are washable forming a standalone module that can be easily further integrated into garments. This is advantageous both for cost-effective production as well as for recycling. POFs are “cold” light sources. Heat generation is inevitably connected with light generation by LEDs. With the use of POFs, as in our concept, heat generation is separated from the emission of light. In case of our garments heat generation can even be placed to positions where it warms up parts of the body.
