Improving the seed potato production system in Tanzania

Project purpose


To identify the possibilities to set-up a seed potato production system in Tanzania, using Dutch seed potato varieties.
The availability of good quality seed potato’s in Tanzania/East Africa would contribute to the economic development as well as food security.

Project results
Identification of the possibilities with the identified stakeholders to come to a project proposal for the production of seed potatoes in Tanzania.
The project proposal contains elements of a possible collaboration between the identified stakeholders, indicating their respective responsibilities and what the project can deliver in terms of technical assistance, capacity and institutional building.
Furthermore the project plan will evaluate the possibilities of the seed potato production chain including the post-harvest issues.
The presence of the local cooperation of seed potato or ware potato growers will be identified.
The presence of a local processing industry in terms of market possibilities from the produced potatoes and their potential need will be investigated.

Possible connection with a national plan for food security will be investigated and pot into a strategical perspective for Tanzania.

Project activities

Program in Tanzania:
During a one week fact-finding mission, the NVWA expert, NAO representative and the Netherlands embassy will visit the relevant stakeholders. So far the following stakeholders have been identified:

  • Ministry of Agriculture in Dar es Salaam possibly a joint meeting with heads of sections; Plant health services, seed unit, Agricultural inputs (incl seeds) etc
  • Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI) in  Morogoro
  • Mtanga farm, Private potato seed multiplication company in Iringa
  • Njombe – potato growing area; visit potato farms including ARI Uyole farm
  • Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) Uyole offices in Mbeya, and;
  • Local government agricultural officers in potato growing regions (Iringa, Njombe & Mbeya regions)

 The program will be further developed in close collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy in Dar Es Salaam. The embassy will take care of the practical organisation.

Apart from meetings with the identified stakeholders the mission will include:

  • Briefing/ Debriefing at the Dutch embassy at Dar Es Salaam
  • Presentation of the findings at the Ministry of Agriculture and its Plant Health Service
  • Presentation of a possible collaboration with the identified stake \holders
