The prevalence of age-related health problems, such as cognitive impairment and dementia has become a worldwide public health concern. A recent (2014) report of the joint research center of the European Commission has highlighted the contribution of diet and nutrition to healthy aging. However, regulatory agencies such as EFSA have given only a few positive opinions so far for nutrients that help maintain cognitive function during aging. Therefore, proven effective nonpharmaceutical means to contribute to healthy aging are in urgent need. Moreover, with an aging population, development of affordable non-invasive imaging techniques and proof of therapeutic efficacy of nutritionals on vascular and cognitive function are urgently required; so far, brain health is measured with expensive stationary equipment such as CT-and MRI scanners, requiring injection of contrast agents.

In BRAINPORT Project, BioActor and Imagelabonline aim at the development and human validation of: (i) a dietary ingredient for the maintenance of brain health and cognitive function and (ii) the validation of non-invasive carotid ultrasound arterial elastography, combined with arterial wall thickness measurements, as a reliable means for the functional and structural noninvasive assessment of the carotid artery as the leading conduit to the brain.
