Development Phase
Northern Kenya is characterised by poor infrastructure and high poverty levels. As a result of marginalisation and the peripheral location, the hospitals in these areas have received uneven attention in the past resulting in very poor healthcare services for the population. The aim of the project is to decentralize healthcare services so that less patients need to be referred to higher level hospitals, and to reduce health inequalities. Furthermore, the capacity of the hospital staff should be strengthened and their living conditions should be improved which will attract hospital staff to the remote areas.
The project can be defined as the rehabilitation of 13 district and provincial hospitals (primary, secondary and tertiary hospitals) in the Northern and Eastern region of Kenya. The project includes (re-)construction, provision of equipment, maintenance and technical assistance. The main elements of the project include the following:
Rehabilitation works (e.g. of electricity and water, painting, lighting, etc.);
Provision of equipment (e.g. new equipment, replacement and expansion);
On the job training for hospital staff (skills improvement, capacity building).
