uMgungundlovu is one of the 11 district municipalities of KwaZulu-Natal province. Throughout the entire district there is a lack of adequate sanitation. The most serious impact on water quality is currently being experienced in and around the uMngeni area. Fast-growing informal settlements contaminate streams and waterways with raw sewage.
The purpose of the project is to bring adequate sanitation to 6 local municipalities in the uMgungundlovu district municipality. To reduce the sanitation problem, 4,280 new VIP latrines will be provided to poor people in the uMDM and the existing sewage network and waste water treatment works (WWTW) will be upgraded. Furthermore, the waste water treatment system upgrade will reduce the number of sewage spills and blockages through the construction of new larger collector mains. In addition to that an estimate of 75 - 100 km new or replaced sewer articulations is build.
The project will provide improved sanitation infrastructure and services which will affect about 304,000 people/ 60percent of the uMgungundlovu District, as well as improving and safeguarding the water quality of major water resources in the District namely, Midmar Dam and the uMngeni River (for 4.8 million people).
